Celebrating and honouring mothers, maternal bonds and the influence of mothers in society is something that dates back to the era of the ancient Greeks and the Romans, both of whom held spring festivals dedicated to maternal goddesses. In more recent history, it was the work of activist Julia Ward Howe in 1872, and later that of the purported “Founder of Mother’s Day”, Anna Jarvis, in the early 1900s, that eventually established “Mother’s Day” as an official celebration in 1914.
Celebrated on varying days in different parts of the world, Mother’s Day, or ‘Mothering Sunday’ is always celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent in the UK, in accordance with the Christian calendar. This year, Mother’s Day falls on Sunday 10th March – this weekend!
