Happy Blogday!

We hope that you had just as much fun in the snow as we did!

As our online promotions, The Converse Super Sweepstakes, near, we thought we’d dedicate this week’s blog to Converse, the brand that will be providing both fantastic prizes in our double sweepstakes this February. We wanted to tell you a little bit about their history. Their ethos. Their likes (sneakers) and dislikes (shoes).

Converse was founded over a century ago, in 1908, by Marquis Mills Converse. With a wealth of design experience behind them, the brand places importance on the way in which they build upon their nearly 105-year-old foundations, aiming to maintain a super-contemporary and popular style whilst remaining true to Converse’s iconic designs. The brand explains, “We’ve been around long enough to learn it’s not about how old you are, but how good you are.” (Converse, 2013).

An example of the way in which Converse honours its heritage within new designs is plainly seen in Converse’s All Star “1908 Premium” watch. This is a design in which a single black stripe runs around the edge of the white watch case, reminiscent of the iconic stripe that often stretches around the sides of Converse’s sneaker soles.

Converse says that its heritage teaches the importance of, “seeing things a little differently, loving people who want to change the world for the better, and basically celebrating the spirit of rebellion and originality in basketball, Rock & Roll and anywhere else you find it.” (Converse, 2013). It’s a brand that celebrates uniqueness – one for those that love an alternative style, and that have a different take on the world. In 1918, famous basketball player Chuck Taylor endorsed Converse’s ethos by becoming an athlete and salesman for the company, running basketball ‘clinics’ in high schools across the country and selling the newly designed ‘All-Star’ shoes – which eventually became known as ‘Chuck Taylor All Stars’ when he added his signature to the design. World badminton champion, Jack Purcell, followed suit around ten years later. Today, countless celebrities endorse the brand with their palpable love of Converse’s sneakers – Daniel Craig, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Aniston, Liv Tyler and even Michelle Obama, to name but a few, have been seen showing off their own pairs. Kristen Stewart often teams couture frocks with Converse’s iconic high-tops on the red carpet.

With such a huge following, it’s not surprising that Converse is still going strong nearly 105 years after its founding. And they’re bigger than ever now, too. Primarily famous for their sneakers, Converse now manufacture a vast collection of other apparel, including clothing and accessories that range from phone cases and key-chains to sunglasses, bags and watches. And now, we’re offering you not one, but two chances to become part of the well-loved Converse club with your very own Converse watch, in our double sweepstakes this February.
